Overanalyzing Tiger
Woods posts a video hitting balls and it's impossible not to wonder what this means for 2022.
Not long ago, the sight of Tiger Woods surfacing after months of silence might have been seen as a poorly-timed attention ploy. The social post appeared as the European Tour was winding down the 2021 season before restarting…this week in South Africa.
Still, the soon-to-be DP World Tour witnessed a Collin Morikawa win to cap off his Race To Dubai campaign of three Euro starts outside of the majors and WGC’s. The day also featured a tantrum-infused Rory McIlroy wardrobe malfunction. Better than most golf Sundays!
Yet Woods took center stage after issuing just a few of generic public statements since February’s car accident when he was rushing to shoot a meaningless bit of “content” for GolfTV and Golf Digest. But let’s put that blunder behind us and recklessly analyze Sunday’s post.
While I’d like to think he was urged to be more public after this post gently reitering the importance of his voice on big ticket items, there may be more here to consider. First, the post as it appeared on Woods’ Twitter and Instagram accounts:
I realize the clip is only three seconds long, but the swing is on plane, if maybe a touch flatter. The action is solid but understandably cautious. This did not stop plenty on social media from asking more questions, including the editorial team here at The Quadrilateral:
Why today? He saw his doctors early this week at Cedars and evidently got the clearance to hit balls. Or, the doctor green-lit a social media post. I’m going with the former.
Was this just a late PIP play? The PGA Tour’s super-silly, super-secret bonus program was going to be won by Woods since it was a rigged cannard to stop stars from taking disruptor money. Maybe Woods sensed someone was lurking and wanted another 23,629 Retweets, 172,462 Likes and 5.7 million views (as of this writing)? The man is a PIP legend already.
He must be itching to play since he’s got a launch monitor out already? Or he needed to keep his friends at Full Swing happy. And feeling frisky about his rehab, too.
Did he hear how much the Saudis are offering middle-of-the-road stars and decide he needs to re-join the disruptor league conversation, one he could shape or kill?
Did he just want to make Phil Mickelson wonder?
All somewhat-kidding questions aside, consider one big-ticket item if Woods is able to play in 2022: would he consider petitioning for a cart to play the majors?
