Cold Weather "Content"
Polar vortex and amber warnings offer a chance to take in a rich library of recent docs and 2024 recaps that include a film on Scottie Scheffler's 2024 and the Curtis Cup.
With dangerous cold and amber warnings coming to much of the Quadrilatereadershipsphere, this Friday afternoon edition felt like an appropriate time to point out the recent holiday season—arghhghghgulp—“content” drops.
(Last month, the Quad reviewed the DP World Tour’s behind the scenes look at the 2023 Ryder Cup: Una Famigli.)
The meatiest of the recent offerings is Scottie 24, a look back at Scottie Scheffler’s historic 2024 season through the eyes of Scheffler, caddie Ted Scott, swing coach Randy Smith, Tiger Woods, Collin Morikawa, and Justin Thomas. The film has been billed as the first original content from PGA Tour Studios and was produced by Sean Martin, directed by Skyler Morton, and edited by Mark Linabury.
The 67-minute effort does not shy away Scheffler’s early season putting struggles and on-course temper tantrums before going behind the scenes look at his wins in the API, The Players, the Olympics, and FedExCup. The film also offers fresh insights into how Scheffler dealt with his arrest at the PGA Championship. One small quibble in what is a fast-moving and revealing hour: a recap of his Masters victory was forced to rely on still images. Proving that The Masters plays no favorites when it comes to footage access! (The 2024 Masters highlight film currently streams exclusively at Masters.com and the Masters app.)
The 10-minute opening episode of Xander Embedded debuted December 27th and might showcase some interesting stuff about 2024’s 2-time major winner, Xander Schauffele. The docuseries expects to offer a glimpse into his newfound Jupiter life and promises multiple episodes throughout the year. Unfortunately, the Avis sponcon vibes may make it tough to get through these if not stopped in their red rental car tracks, ASAP.
Rising: Inside the Curtis Cup debuted at R&A TV and is now available on YouTube. The 30-minute film features fresh interviews with Captain Catriona Matthew and members of the GB&I team, who squeaked out a thrilling one-point win over the USA at Sunningdale.
Inside The Open returned to the coverage menu offerings in 2024 and with this compilation of random clips from the week, provides subtle reveals spliced together seamlessly in a narrator-free effort. It’s a soothing 16 minutes of bits and pieces from Royal Troon, including Bryson DeChambeau trying to hit a persimmon driver as far as he can. There is also plenty more from Postage Stamp practice and behind-the-scenes scenes at the conclusion of Schauffele’s win.
Larry Nelson narrates a behind-the-scenes look at his 1983 U.S. Open victory at Oakmont over Tom Watson and Seve Ballesteros. The latest in the always-excellent My U.S. Open film series reminds us how Oakmont used to look with trees as we gear up for 2025’s first U.S. Open in nine years. Throw in some Jim McKay for good measure, and it’s an excellent effort.
The Masters continued its Hallowed Grounds series by looking at the history and popularity of the tournament’s world-famous concessions. It had me hankering for a panini press to see how a pimento cheese sandwich might hold up with a little winter time compression and heat.
Finally, if you need to hear one more Christmas-themed song, why not enjoy a holiday performance of the Augusta? Recorded at the Press Building’s Barlett Lounge, a lovely bell choir is enlisted to replace Dave Loggins’ piano and lyrics celebrating the wooden-shafted legend of Bobby Jones.
Have a great weekend!
So, let me get this straight one more time. Larry Nelson was passed over as Ryder Cup Captain despite winning the US Open at Oakmont. And the PGA Championship, TWICE (sorry for shouting). Yes, that is the genesis of the Ryder Cup jinx for the US team, and there is to be no recovery in my lifetime. But I am old, so maybe there is hope in Ghost, Jr's lifetime.
Those Masters bells really got the attention of one of my kittens! She made a mad sprint for my computer to try to figure out what was going on. So, uh, maybe not for everyone.
That did get me thinking: how great would it be to have a Butler Cabin yule log? Then I thought, hell, Augusta National is getting really good at this social media stuff, maybe they already have one? (Maybe it was mentioned here a year ago?)
Of course they do. Feels like something that could be very beneficial for my blood pressure.
