Better Than Most Putting Contest Weeks
There was a silly season vibe to some of last weekend's tournaments. But several players landed major invites and several others stood out.
With only 67 and 74 days remaining until 2022’s opening majors, an early season power ranking sounded like it would be a good idea. But then the world No. 1 cussed about the “putting contest week”, Tyrrell Hatton fumed about unreachable-in-two three-shotters, and Danielle Kang had to fight off an obnoxious DJ to win the same tournament where Annika Sorenstam lost the celebrity division playoff.
So after tense editorial meetings during the Rams near-disastrous meltdown, The Quadrilateral decided to punt the ranking until things get less silly. Instead, you devoted subscribers get a recap of the weekend weirdness. I also hope this is useful to those who watched something else. Which is most of you.
Hudson Swafford captured The American Express final round and his $1.36 million check will cash the same despite Jon Rahm’s views about the less-than-challenging setup.
Apparently having confused the AmEx with a major (maybe because it’s rumored to be hosted by Phil Mickelson?), Rahm cussed his way off a tee to the delight of a fan recording what seemed destined to be a waste of valuable cloud storage space. Until Rahm started talking to himself…
Kids, cover your eyes, this is a family newsletter. 🙈
“Piece of shit fucking setup, putting contest week,” Rahm growled, to which the smiling woman above asked if the videographer “got that”.
Oh he got it.
It appears Rahm (T14) still has some mental cobwebs to work through before Augusta. Jon, save that passion for Netflix! Sorry, I see you’re not on the list.
Elsewhere in the men’s and women’s game…
